2 and 3 trains bypass Clark St after Brooklyn awning crash at old hotel – NBC New York

Repairs were still underway late Sunday following the collapse and crash of a massive awning that adorns the front of an apartment building in Brooklyn.

City inspectors and crews were on hand all day following the dramatic collapse of the awning around 7 a.m. in Brooklyn Heights. The 10 foot by 20 foot marquee stretched the length of the sidewalk, blocking the entrance to the Clark Street subway station, which services the 2 and 3 trains.

The MTA had train service rerouted past the station for much of Sunday while the investigation into the crash continued. Officials hoped to have operations running as normal again after the Monday morning commute.

In the meantime, riders were encouraged to grab their train at the nearby Borough Hall stop.

Security footage captured the large awning come down outside the home of the former Hotel St. George. Luckily, no one was walking by at the time.

FDNY crews had the area sealed off to prevent any further incident as the city’s Department of Buildings began its investigation of the scene.

The Hotel St. George was once the one of the largest hotels in the world. The buildings were converted into co-op apartments in the 1980s.

In addition to the two subway entrances, the Henry Street building is also home to storefronts and is used by Educational Housing Service to house students.

The DOB said its issued a partial vacate order after engineers observed the steel beams that held the structure up were completed corroded. The agency also said a similar awning that covers another entrance to the Clark Street station shows similar signs of poor maintenance.
