Nevada State Police (NSP) charged hundreds of motorists – including one who was traveling at 131 MPH – over Memorial Day weekend.
The unnamed speeder was charged for driving while intoxicated, authorities told Las Vegas TV station KTNV. One other DUI arrest took place over the weekend in the state, too.
A first-time DUI charge in Nevada can lead to such penalties as:
- Two days to six months in jail
- $400–$1K in fines, plus court costs
- License suspended up to 185 days
- Several days of community service
Those previously found guilty of DUI who are charged again can face more serious penalties.
For instance, a third DUI charge within seven years is a felony. Those convicted, may face one to six years in state prison and may be forced to pay between $2K and $5K in fines.
In total, over the three days starting on Friday, state troopers from Nevada and California gave out 437 citations for speeding and other charges during the special enforcement.
Many arrests took place on I-15 between St. Rose Parkway and the Nevada state line.
Due in part to stepped-up enforcement, no fatalities occurred on I-15 over the holiday weekend, according to NSP.
Zero -Tolerance for Speeding
“This stretch of Interstate 15 was once considered one of the deadliest stretches of highway in the country,” a NSP spokesperson told Las Vegas TV station KTNV.
The selective enforcement was a joint operation between NSP and California Highway Patrol.
This weekend we had a zero-tolerance zone for speeding, distracted and impaired driving, shoulder runners etc.,” the spokesperson added to KTNV.
“Even the most minor traffic infractions were enforced during this holiday weekend.”
Last Friday, NSP alerted drivers troopers would be patrolling for traffic violations.
Never Drive Impaired
“Please buckle up, slow down and never drive impaired,” the NSP warned in a recent Facebook post. “Make it a safe weekend for everyone on our roadways.”
This Memorial Day weekend as well as every day, buckle up every time you get into a vehicle. It could save your life and it’s the law! Remember, mobile off and seat belt on,” the post added.
NSP also posted warnings to drivers to slow down in messages on electronic boards alongside the highway.
On Friday: NSP issued 325 citations. 215 were for speeding, and two motorists were charged with DUI.
Between Saturday and Monday: NSP gave out 81 citations for speeding. 31 citations were given for other types of violations. Also, 21 drivers were given warnings.
