Johnny’s Pizzeria, a beloved pizzeria in Sunset Park, is closing its doors after 56 years in business.
Wednesday marks the final day of operations, as the owners of the family-run business announced online that they’ve decided to retire.

“We would like to thank the many lifelong friends who have become like family to us from the community,” a statement on the website said. “You have shown us kindness and loyalty over the almost 56 years that we have been in business.”
The restaurant, located at Fifth Avenue between 59th and 60th Streets, opened in 1968 by pizzaiolo patriarch John Miniaci Sr. and became famous for their square slices. His son, John Miniaci Jr. (who’s been working there since he was 13) is the current owner along with two partners.
The restaurant celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2018 when it was honored by former mayor Bill de Blasio with a letter congratulating them on their success.
“We would not have been able to be successful for so many years without your support and loyalty. It has truly been an honor to serve you all,” the online statement said.
They also thanked the number of employees that have worked there over the past decades. “Your willingness to work alongside us and meet the expectations of our customers daily will never be forgotten or taken for granted,” they said.
The shuttering of Johnny’s comes on the heels of the loss of other beloved Brooklyn pizza institutions. Last year, Carroll Gardens mainstay Sal’s Pizza Store and Lenny’s Pizzeria in Bensonhurst, famous for its cameo in “Saturday Night Fever,” also shut their doors.
